TEACHING JOBS AVAILABLE AT NEW SMALL CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Bert Corona Charter School will open in September 2004 as a community-based, technology-oriented middle school with a personalized learning environment for students and teachers. The school will have a traditional calendar and will serve 6th-8th grade students from predominantly Latino immigrant families in the Northeast San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California.
The school is named after Bert Corona, a Latino activist who dedicated his life to achieving social and economic justice for under-served immigrant communities in Los Angeles and across the nation. The Bert Corona Charter School is committed to high standards, equity, and civic responsibility. The school is affiliated with the Coalition for Essential Schools and the School Redesign Network. As such, the school will foster personalization, active engagement of students, a tone of decency and respect, and family/community partnership.
For the first year of operations, the school will serve 264 sixth graders. In the second year, Corona Charter will add seventh grade students, with grade eight following the third year. Teacher teams, with regularly scheduled team planning time, will work with approximately 75 students throughout their three years at the school.

Classes will focus on interdisciplinary, project-based learning culminating in “capstone” exhibitions.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and valid California Teaching Credential in subject area of instruction or multi-subject credential.
- Knowledge of middle school curriculum and adolescent development.
- Experience and expertise teaching low-income students.
- Ability to help English Language Learners become bilingual. Candidates with CLAD/BCLAD highly encouraged.
- Interest in integrating technology and service-learning into instruction.
- Commitment to working closely with parents/family members of the students.
- Desire to be part of a professional learning community.
- Ability to lead a student advisory group.
- Bilingual teachers (Spanish/English) preferred.
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary: Commensurate with experience and success in the classroom
Work Year: 190 days/40+ hour week.
Start Date: Flexible hours during May-August start-up. School will open in September 2004.
